Through the use of characters, masks, sound, and the integration of creative set and prop pieces,
WATER illustrates how the people of Walkerton and the area were impacted by the tragic events of
May 2000 and how many are still affected today. The play loosely follows the story of a fictional
young boy named Jason and his family, as well as a host of other characters, each one sharing their
own personal stories and experiences.
WATER was written and is performed by Brad Curtin who grew up in and around the Walkerton area.
He wrote this one-man show to give others across the country a sense of the true impact that the
water tragedy has had on everyone's lives.
The Set Designer, Greg Schnurr, a talented artist and teacher, also grew up in the area. He and Brad
have known each other since early childhood. The Director, Darlene Spencer, was Brad's drama teacher
at the University of Waterloo. She is presently the head of acting at the Randolph Academy for the
performing arts in Toronto. The Sound Designer, Joey Morin, was a student with Brad at the University
of Waterloo. The Stage Manager, Sarah Brebner, met Brad while working on a film in Korea. The considerable
blend of talents of all these fine artists can easily be seen in this wonderful production.
WATER also features voice clips by Scott Pettigrew, flute by Angela Hammar, Cello by Sybilla
Walke,
and Church Organ by Joy King. The radio clips and music add another lovely layer of texture to WATER.
